Sex Lube - The Complete guide

What is Lube? What is Lubricant?

When most ask this question, they are referring to commercially-available, liquid “personal lubricants” used during sexual activity.

Whew, sexual lovin’ is tons of fun… especially the part where you and your spouse’s sexually-charged bodies are bumpin’ and grindin’ into each other. The problem is lots of rubbin’ creates friction, which can irritate skin all over the body. It can also cause a great deal of discomfort or pain.

Lube is here to save the day! Lube is applied to the vagina, vulva, penis, condom, hand, anus, sex toy, or anywhere else you may want it… to make it wetter and more slippery for sexual movements.

More Lube!

This may be the most comprehensive guide to sexual lubricants that you have ever read.

Grab a tasty beverage, get comfy, and let’s get to it!

Natural Lubricants Produced by the Body

Natural Vaginal Lubricants. During sexual arousal, the female body naturally produces a variety of fluids to help with lubrication during intercourse and sexual activity. God designed the body for the penis and vagina to fit and work well with each other! He also designed the body to help that process work.

Saliva / Spit! This shouldn’t require a lengthy explanation… sometimes a little spit on the fingers, penis, or vagina is all that is need to get everything sliding.

Menstruation Blood. The blood produced during a woman’s menstrual cycle can be used as a natural sexual lubricant. Many men and women do not prefer to have sex during a woman’s menstrual cycle. Others find it particularly appealing.

  • Be Aware. Sex may have stronger odors or be messy. So, you may want to enjoy it in the shower, use a condom, or have more towels handy. There are also increased risks of sexually transmitted infections.
  • Benefits. Some women report benefits of relief from menstrual cramp, shorter periods, reduced headaches, and even more enjoyable sex!

Interestingly, there are multiple references in the Old Testament (Leviticus 15) to sex during menstruation being “unclean”. However, Christians today are not bound to Old Testament “ceremonial Law”, so there is no “Biblical reason” to abstain from it. Some doctors

Why Use Lube?

It usually makes sex better for both of you! This is the short reason! It decreases friction and helps make everything more slippery, which makes sex physically, mentally, and emotionally better.

Everybody’s body is different! Sometimes a woman may not produce enough lubricant. Her vaginal canal may be more narrow or “tight”, which is often the case for virgins and women with no to little sexual history (awesome!). Also, his penis may be particularly large or have a non-standard shape or curve.

Dry groins are no fun for sexual lovin’

Vaginal Dryness & Pain. Vaginal dryness can make sexual activity and enjoyment incredibly difficult. It occurs for a variety of reasons, most of which are beyond a woman’s control:

  • Stress, anxiety, and state of mind or heart.
  • Decreased estrogen levels during menopause.
  • Breastfeeding can increase vaginal dryness.
  • Effects of prescription drugs, chemotherapy or other medical treatments.

Masturbation in Marriage. We believe masturbation is not appropriate for for single people. It has a unique and limited role in the context of marriage. In those limited circumstances or situations in marriage, lubricant may be needed. One day, we will write a much longer exploration of this topic.

Anal Sex. This article will NOT delve into the theological debate about whether or not anal sex is appropriate for married Christians. We will explore that discussion another day. Regardless, lubricant is necessary for anal sex because the anus does not produce any natural lubricants. Without lube, anal sex can be excruciatingly painful and may cause physical injury.

The Benefits of Sex Lube for Sexual Intimacy

Below is SHORT list of the benefits of lube. The “con” list is pretty much non-existent.

  • Increased physical and/or mental comfort.
  • More sexual pleasure & enjoyment for BOTH of you!

Water-Based Lubes: Liquid, Gel & Jelly

A popular choice for many couples, water-based lubricants like Astroglide Water-Based Lubricant, K-Y Jelly Gel or K-Y Natural Feeling Liquid are easy to find and make clean up much easier after your intimate time. You only need soap and water to clean up. It won’t deteriorate condoms or silicone toys.

There are some caveats to water-based lubricants though. Many of these lubricants contain glycerine, which can cause irritation or allergic reaction in both men and women. Moreover, there are also certain water-based lubricants that contain parabens, which can cause skin irritation as well.

Water-based lubricants tend to evaporate faster than their silicone and oil-based counterparts. Couples who use these lubricants will find they need to reapply frequently during intercourse to maintain everyone’s comfort and prevent irritation and other unpleasant side effects of using too little lubrication during intercourse.

PROs of Water-Based Lubes

  • Available at most pharmacy stores.
  • Cleans up with soap and warm water.
  • Doesn’t degrade toys or condoms.

CONs of Water-Based Lubes

  • Requires frequent reapplication.
  • May contain glycerine.
  • May contain parabens.

Water-Based Liquid Lubes

Gel & Jelly Lubes

Silicone Lubes

Silicone lube feels soft and INCREDIBLE! Everyone should try it.The properties of silicone lubricants are by far superior to both water-based and oil-based lubricants. If you are concerned about having to reapply frequently or skin reactions to glycerine and parabens, silicone lubricants are also generally free of these additives and evaporate far less quickly than water-based lubricant. Popular choices include Astroglide Diamond Silicone Gel and Body Action Xtreme Silicone.

They Damage Silicone Toys. A word to the wise about silicone lubricants: they can cause damage to silicone toys, as their shared silicone base can cause the lubricant to solidify permanently on the surfaces of the toy itself.

Silicone Lube can be Sticky. Additionally, silicone lubricants can leave a sticky residue on your skin even after you have washed with warm soapy water. This is important to keep in mind if you need the additional lubrication silicone gel and liquid lubricants provide, but you don’t have as much time for cleanup afterwards.

PROs of Silicone Lubes

  • Feels silky smooth.
  • Lasts longer because it evaporates less quickly than water-based lubricants.
  • Provides superior lubrication over oil and water-based lubricants.
  • Paraben and glycerine-free.

CONs of Silicone Lubes

  • Cannot be used with silicone-based toys!
  • May form a sticky residue even after cleanup.
  • May require using a special soap to completely clean up.

Oil-Based Lubes

Some couples find the best lubricants for them are oil-based. This can include blends of natural oils, both mineral-based and plant-based. Oil-based lubricants have the distinct advantage of being less likely to contain additives and preservatives that cause irritation or allergic reactions when applied to sensitive skin.

They are natural moisturizers and require the least reapplication of all personal lubricants. Baby oil (mineral oil), unscented massage oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, argan oil, sunflower oil, almond oil, ylang ylang oil, and olive oil are all oil-based lubricants that some people use as alternative to water and silicone based lubricants.

There are some drawbacks to oil-based lubricants, too. You can’t use them with latex condoms because they degrade the latex material, causing latex condoms to break more easily. Fortunately, if you use polyurethane condoms you don’t have to worry about this problem. There is one universal drawback of oil-based lubricants though: fabric staining. You should put a towel down before using oil-based lubricants to prevent the oils from seeping into the sheets and causing a potentially permanent stain.

Best Uses for Oil-Based Lube

  • A good ole’ hand job and hand stimulation
  • Erogenous job exploration
  • Erotic massage

PROs of Oil-Based Lubes

  • Rarely needs reapplication
  • Does not contain irritating additives or preservatives like glycerine and parabens.
  • Naturally moisturizing/promotes healthy skin.

CONs of Oil-Based Lubes

  • Destroys latex condoms.
  • Again… DO NOT USE with latex condoms!
  • Petroleum/mineral based oils can increase the risk of urinary tract and vaginal infections.
  • Require additional cleanup time with soap and warm water.

Hybrid Lubes

Sometimes you can get the best of everything, and that’s the case with hybrid lubricants. Instead of using either silicone or water-based lubricants, these hybrids offer the benefits of both water-based lubricants (easier clean up with soap and water) and silicone-based lubricants (superior lubrication, less rapid evaporation). Some of the more popular choices include Sliquid Silk, Jo Hybrid, and Turn On.

Hybrid lubricant is still not suitable for use with silicone toys, but it is much easier to clean up compared to silicone-only lubricants, and it doesn’t leave any sticky residue behind either. Most hybrid lubricants do not contain either glycerine or parabens either, so there’s less to worry about from irritation or allergic reactions after long term use.

PROs of Hybrid Lubes

  • Lubricates like silicone, cleans up like water-based products.
  • The best of both worlds with fewer drawbacks.
  • Most are free of parabens and glycerine.

CONs of Hybrid Lubes

  • Not as long lasting as oil-based lubricants.
  • Not safe for use with silicone toys.
  • Not as easy to clean up as water-based lubricants.

Sensitive & Gentle Lubes

Formulated specially for men and women who have sensitive skin, these lubricants are often water-based or oil-based lubricants that are fragrance free, paraben-free, and glycerine-free. Better still,  no additives means significantly less potential for skin irritation issues.

The fact that most of these are all-natural plant-based oils does mean they can potentially cause staining on clothes or bedding, but most plant oil stains are much easier to lift than mineral-based oil stains. Additionally, while these do not evaporate like water-based and silicone lubricants, they are more readily absorbed by the skin, and you may find you have to reapply them more frequently than regular oil-based lubricants.

PROs of Sensitive & Gentle Lubes

  • Additive free.
  • Made with all-natural, organic, plant-based oils and ingredients.
  • Fragrance free.

CONs of Sensitive & Gentle Lubes

  • More easily absorbed by your skin.
  • Need to be reapplied more frequently.
  • May require additional cleanup time with warm soapy water.

More Sex Lube Variations & Options

If that isn’t enough, there are even more variations, options, and features with which you and your spouse can explore! This isn’t meant to overwhelm you. We simply want to inform you!

Organic & Natural Lubes

Many couples find they prefer lubricants made from all natural ingredients that haven’t been exposed to pesticides or that use oil expressed from genetically modified plants. These are ethical and personal health concerns for many, and you should be aware there are options available that are certified organic and non-GMO.

They tend to be a bit pricier than conventional lubricants, but if you are looking to shop your values you will find plenty of all natural and organic lubricants to choose from.

Vegan Lubes

Made with no animal products of any kind, vegan lubricants allow those who do not consume, use, or wear animal products to make consistent ethical choices in the bedroom.

Aloe-Based Lubes

If you have recently experienced irritation from another lubricant, these aloe-based lubricants can help ease that irritation without needing to postpone intimacy. Made with soothing aloe vera, these lubricants ease the burning sensation common to inadequate lubrication or use of a lubricant that irritates one or both of your skin.

Coconut-Based Lubes

Many people herald the benefits of coconut oil (although, there is little scientific or medical evidence to support the claims). Regardless, coconut oil-based lubricants are also popular with many couples. They are non-irritating, provide exceptional protection and nourishment for your skin, and they clean up easily with soap and warm water.

Edible & Flavored Lubes

Variety is good, and trying new things is part of a healthy sex life. Flavored oils can enhance the experience for both of you, and add excitement and enjoyment to intimate activities you may be trying for the first time.

Warming & Tingling Lubes

Unique sensations can be exciting, and using a warming or tingling lubricant can add something new for both of you. If you’ve tried warming or tingling massage oils, or you are looking for a unique intimate experience, you may want to give these specialized oils a try for yourselves.

Desensitizing Lubes

Some couples find their intimate time is a bit too intense for one or both of them, resulting in less-than-positive experience for one or both husband and wife. If you find this to be the case, a desensitizing lubricant may be just want you need to slow everything down and help both of you to enjoy your shared experience to the full.

Spermicidal Lubes

While no form of medicinal or physical birth control is 100 percent effective, using a spermicidal lubricant rather than condoms or spermicide films offers another method to give you more control over when you grow your family.

Spermicidal lubricant comes in various bases to suit any taste or personal need, and can help decrease the potential for conceiving a child when you are not actively trying to get pregnant.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT depend on spermicidal lube as a primary method of birth control!

How to choose the right lube for both of you!

Looking out for both your needs, curiosities, and desires is the cornerstone of a healthy, loving marriage. This also applies to choosing a personal lubricant.

Picking the right personal lubricant can take time & experimentation. It’s okay if you don’t find one that you both enjoy right away. It may take trial-and-error with multiples activities to find your favorites.

Remember to communicate. Talk with each other, and if there is something about a particular lubricant you like or dislike, tell your spouse. Your spouse is NOT a mind reader. The key to healthy intimacy is sharing openly and honestly about what you do and do NOT prefer with each other… while also being open-minded and curious. Communicate well, and you will find a lubricant that makes every intimate moment you spend together enjoyable for both of you.

Order a sampler pack or individual-use packets. Ordering a sample pack or trying individual packets, let’s you explore which lubricants, brands, or variations you both enjoy! Make sure to try the different substances (gels & jellies, water-based, silicone, oil-based, etc) and types (warming, tingling, etc.) for different sexual activities to see which are right for you.

An abundance of lube can give you an excuse to have lots and lots of sex… get to it!
