Spermicidal Lube

Spermicidal lube is designed to immobilize and kill sperm before pregnancy can occur. When used alone, it is NOT an effective means of birth control. When used with condoms, cervical caps, or diaphragms, it further decreases the chance of pregnancy.

Nonoxynol-9 is the commonly used spermicidal chemical compound. It should not be used excess because it can damage skin cell layers in the vaginal lining and can cause inflammation of the vagina and cervix. Spermicidal lubes may also irritate the genitals.
